How to Fix a Patchy, Yellowing Lawn: Start by Diagnosing

Yellowing and bare patches all look similar but have very different causes, and treating the wrong one wastes time and money. Before you act, work out what the pattern of damage is telling you.

Look at where the problem appears. Yellowing in low spots points to waterlogging, yellowing in high-traffic lines points to compaction, and scattered round dead patches often mean pets or fungus.

• Worn paths and edges: soil compaction or heavy traffic
• Round brown spots: pet urine or fungal disease
• Overall pale colour: nutrient deficiency or too little sun

Water and Drainage Problems

In Pune, both extremes cause yellowing. Summer under-watering scorches grass to straw, while monsoon waterlogging suffocates the roots and yellows the whole lawn from the bottom up.

Check that low spots drain within a few hours of rain. If water sits, the fix is to aerate, add sand and, in bad cases, re-grade the area so water runs off rather than pooling.

Compaction, Nutrients and Pests

Heavy clay soil compacts easily, especially along walked-on routes, choking the roots. Aeration by spiking the soil lets air and water back in and is one of the most effective repairs.

Pale, weak grass across the whole lawn usually means it is hungry, so feed with a balanced fertiliser or manure. Sudden patches after the monsoon can be fungal and need a treatment plus better airflow and drainage.

Repairing the Bare Patches

Once the underlying cause is fixed, the patches themselves are easy to repair. Loosen the bare soil, mix in compost, and either lay a small piece of matching turf or sprig it from a healthy part of the lawn.

Keep the repaired area consistently moist and off-limits until the new grass roots in. The monsoon and winter are the best times to patch, as young grass establishes fastest then.
