October to February is the golden season for Pune gardeners. Cool, dry weather is perfect for a huge range of flowers and vegetables. Here is what to plant and how to make the most of it.
Winter gardening in Pune is the season of plenty
From October to February, Pune settles into cool, dry, sunny days and pleasant nights, and this is when gardens truly come alive. The stress of summer heat and monsoon damp is gone, and plants can put their energy into growth and flowering.
This is the window to grow the widest variety of plants of the entire year. If there is one season to be ambitious with your garden in Pune, this is it.
The best winter flowers to plant now
Pune's winter is tailor-made for cool-season annuals, the kind of vivid blooms that simply cannot survive the summer. Sown or transplanted in October, they reward you with colour right through to February.
Start seeds in trays in early October, or buy healthy seedlings from a nursery to get a head start on the display.
- Petunia, pansy and dianthus for months of continuous colour
- Marigold and chrysanthemum for reliable, low-fuss blooms
- Sweet pea and nasturtium for fragrance and edible flowers
- Calendula, salvia and phlox to fill out beds and borders
- Dahlia tubers for showstopping late-winter flowers
Grow a winter vegetable patch
Cool-season, or rabi, vegetables are among the easiest and most satisfying things to grow in Pune. The mild weather means fewer pests, less disease and crisp, sweet harvests.
Most of these can be grown in the ground, in raised beds or even in decent-sized containers on a balcony or terrace.
- Leafy greens: spinach, methi, lettuce, coriander and dill
- Root crops: carrot, radish, beetroot and turnip
- Brassicas: cabbage, cauliflower, broccoli and knol khol
- Others: peas, tomatoes, capsicum, onions and garlic
Winter care: watering, sun and cool nights
Winter care is refreshingly simple compared with the other seasons, but a few adjustments keep things thriving. Plants use less water in the cool weather, so overwatering becomes the main risk.
The lower sun angle also matters. Spots that were shaded in summer may now get useful light, so it is worth rethinking where you place pots and seedling trays.
- Cut back on watering and let the top layer of soil dry between waterings
- Move pots to catch maximum sunlight during the short winter days
- Water in the morning so foliage dries before the cool night
- Feed flowering and fruiting plants regularly to fuel their growth spurt
Prepare beds and soil for the season
A little groundwork in early winter pays off for months. After the monsoon, Pune's black-cotton soil is often compacted and depleted, so loosening and enriching it gives new plants the best start.
This is also the ideal time to top up compost and organic matter, as the mild weather helps roots make the most of it.
